Looking to buy a gift for a Photographer, a bit lost here.(r/photography)

Get her a 50mm prime lense. It has a f1.8 maximum aperture, which will allow in 3x as much light as her stock lense. This will really help indoors and especially at concerts. It’s also just plain better glass then the kit lenses she’s using.

The one downside is that it doesn’t zoom. If you want more in your picture, you’ve gotta move your feet and back it up. Also, with it’s wide aperture she’ll get a really narrow depth of field which will make for more interesting portraits and the like. This is where only a fraction of the scene is in focus, and the rest will be blurred.
